Learning In Wellington's Early Years Foundation Stage

Reading and writing float on a sea of talk’ James Britton

Talk is the foundation of learning in the Early Years and at Wellington we implement our Early Years curriculum in a manner that supports language.

In Nursery your child will:

  • Take part in daily small group learning called 'Group Time'
  • Be supported by adults who will play with them, listen to them, talk to them, teach and nurture them
  • Be introduced to the Nursery core books, wonderful stories that are read again and again (see the book list here)
  • Learn traditional games and traditional rhymes as part of the Wellington Curriculum
  • Take part in whole class carpet sessions, where books are shared, maths songs are sung and storytelling is developed
  • Start to learn about sounds all around them, as a pre-curser to phonics
  • Learn about rhyme, the sounds letters make, and aliteration, all through games and stories as part of our early phonics programme
  • Have their learning documented in a special book, which they will look at and discuss with their teachers and parents- sharing special books allows children to revisit vocabulary and remember and celebrate their learning experiences with the people around them

In Reception your child will:

  • Have language enhanced by themes and practitioners that support children to broaden their naming and describing vocabulary for the world around them i.e Themes are linked to family and community, people who help us, buildings, transport and the natural world
  • Become a storyteller! Storytelling is timetabled to support children to know and remember key texts and the language patterns, including the repeated refrains, that accompany them.  This will give your child a starting point for their own story making.
  • Be introduced to the Reception core books that are read repeatedly to children to enrich their language and to give them a basis for innovation (see the book list here)
  • Learn traditional games and traditional rhymes as part of the Wellington Curriculum
  • Have their learning celebrated in class floorbooks. These are highly valued, communal learning documents that promote discussion, language and an opportunity to reflect further on learning

Learning Gallery

Nursery maths during 'group-time'.

Children investigate joins and mechanisms in Reception.  A simple pulley makes the spider climb the spout!

A hole punch and threading creates a lanyard for a new teacher!

Children in Reception have fun playing traditional games outside.

The children in Early Years learn about all the festivals celebrated by people in our community. Here, children are re-telling the Diwali story of Rama and Sita.

Children in the early years explore challenging concepts in practical ways. These Reception children are exploring the idea of 'equal' in maths.

In Nursery,  counting songs help children to develop their understanding of number.
