Maths

"Mathematics is a creative and highly inter-connected discipline that has been developed over centuries, providing the solution to some of history’s most intriguing problems. It is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. A high-quality mathematics education therefore provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject."

National Curriculum 2013

We use White Rose maths to support our teaching. Throughout Foundation Stage, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, children learn different aspects of maths, developing their knowledge and skills.

Children learn about

  • number and place value
  • number - addition and subtraction
  • number - multiplication and division
  • number - fractions, decimals and percentages
  • geometry - properties of shape
  • geometry - position and movement
  • statistics
  • measurement

Children use different resources to support their learning, particularly in calculations.

Number rhymes help our youngest children to develop an understanding of addition and subtraction.

Children use the 'part, part, whole' model for early addition.

In Nursery,  children take part in 'group-time'.

Year 1 children also learn maths practically, building on their learning in the Early Years.

Explaining  maths to a partner in Year 1 helps children to develop their mathematical vocabulary and develops a deeper understanding of key concepts.

Playing traditional games helps children to develop their abilities in maths too.

Children in Year 1 also learn inside and outside.
